The project was part of the Network Rail upgrade plan for the North of England. The aim of the project was to improve and increase connectivity across towns and cities by re-routing services and creating new links. Personnel working through CarmichaelUK were involved in setting out of the works especially concrete structures, implementation of the new viaduct, removal of a Victorian footbridge, and construction of The Ordsall Chord.
