About the Role

Carmichael UK are recruiting for an experienced Commissioning Engineer to join Costain's Thames Water AMP7 framework team. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the delivery of major water and wastewater treatment projects, providing full lifecycle commissioning support from design and installation through to testing, client handover and operational acceptance.

The successful candidate will work closely with project teams, designers, subcontractors and client representatives to ensure safe, compliant and efficient commissioning of electrical, mechanical and process systems across complex infrastructure schemes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement commissioning plans, procedures and documentation.
  • Provide commissioning input throughout the project lifecycle from design review through to client handover.
  • Coordinate installation, testing and commissioning activities with suppliers, subcontractors and third-party engineers.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) activities.
  • Ensure all equipment is fully tested, defect-free and ready for site installation.
  • Witness installation and commissioning activities, ensuring compliance with project specifications, ITPs and quality standards.
  • Review RAMS and ensure commissioning activities are delivered safely and in accordance with SHEQ requirements.
  • Configure, calibrate and integrate process and analytical equipment with monitoring and control systems.
  • Review and interpret P&IDs, Functional Design Specifications, electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Identify and implement required design modifications and value engineering opportunities.
  • Manage defect resolution, snagging and close-out activities.
  • Capture, record and maintain installation, testing and commissioning records.
  • Produce regular progress reports and updates for the Core Management Team and senior stakeholders.
  • Support programme management activities and provide weekly progress updates.
  • Deliver training to client operations and maintenance teams.
  • Promote continual improvement through lessons learned, technical best practice and behavioural SHEQ initiatives.
  • Support Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), site surveys and system reviews.
  • Act as a front-line supervisor during commissioning and installation phases.
  • Undertake Electrical or Mechanical Authorised Person responsibilities following assessment and training.

Requirements

Essential

  • Previous experience working for a main contractor within the UK water or wastewater sector.
  • Minimum 3 years' commissioning experience on water/wastewater process engineering projects.
  • Proven track record delivering installation and commissioning projects through to successful handover.
  • Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical and process commissioning activities.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards, safety regulations and statutory legislation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex engineering issues and implement practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with a structured and proactive approach.
  • Ability to lead site teams when required.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, or an Engineering Apprenticeship with NVQ and relevant industry experience.
  • ECS/CSCS Card.
  • Water Hygiene Card.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS.
  • BS7671 18th Edition.
  • First Aid at Work.

Desirable

  • Professional registration and membership of a recognised engineering institution.
  • CompEx qualification.
  • Experience undertaking Authorised Person responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of Thames Water or AMP frameworks.

The ideal candidate will be a technically strong Commissioning Engineer with a hands-on approach, excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage commissioning activities from planning through to completion. You will be comfortable working directly with clients, contractors and operational teams while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and technical compliance.
