Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) - Access for All Rail Projects

Contract Type: Freelance – Inside IR35

 

An established rail contractor is seeking an experienced Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) to support the successful delivery of a portfolio of Access for All (AfA) projects across the UK rail network.  This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing team delivering schemes focused on improving station accessibility, including new lift installations, reinforced concrete lift shafts, footbridges, platform enhancements, structural modifications and associated rail infrastructure works.

 

The Role

As CRE, you will provide engineering leadership and technical assurance throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring all design and construction activities are delivered in accordance with Network Rail standards, project requirements and safety obligations.

Working closely with project managers, design consultants, construction teams and Network Rail stakeholders, you will act as the key engineering authority across multiple AfA projects.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Acting as the Contractors Responsible Engineer in accordance with Network Rail governance requirements
  • Providing technical leadership across design and construction activities
  • Reviewing and approving engineering deliverables and design submissions
  • Managing engineering interfaces between civils, structural, M&E and rail disciplines
  • Ensuring compliance with Network Rail standards, procedures and engineering assurance requirements
  • Supporting design reviews, constructability assessments and value engineering initiatives
  • Managing technical risks and supporting project delivery teams in resolving engineering challenges
  • Coordinating with designers, subcontractors and client representatives
  • Overseeing engineering change control processes
  • Supporting project planning, programme development and construction methodologies
  • Providing technical input into stakeholder meetings and project reporting
  • Ensuring engineering works are delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with all relevant standards

  • Access for All station improvement schemes
  • New lift installations
  • Reinforced concrete lift shafts
  • Station footbridges
  • Structural steel footbridge installations
  • Platform extensions and modifications
  • Station accessibility upgrades
  • Foundations and substructure works
  • Drainage and associated civil engineering works
  • Mechanical and electrical integration works

 

Requirements

  • Previous experience operating as a CRE on Network Rail infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of Network Rail engineering assurance processes
  • Experience delivering station upgrades, structures or accessibility schemes
  • Proven background in civil engineering and structural projects
  • Knowledge of rail design management and construction delivery
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously
  • Excellent communication and technical leadership skills

 

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards Chartered status
  • Suitable Network Rail CRE competency approval
  • PTS certification preferred
