Carmichael UK is working in partnership with a Tier 1 joint venture contractor delivering a key section of the HS2 programme in Northamptonshire. We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to work closely with the Construction Director, providing technical leadership, assurance, and engineering oversight across the project.

This is a site-based role, offering the opportunity to play a critical part in the successful delivery of one of the UK’s largest infrastructure schemes.

The Role

As Engineering Manager, you will provide independent technical and engineering oversight of construction activities, ensuring works are executed in accordance with design, standards, and HS2 requirements. You will act on behalf of the Contractor’s Engineering leadership, supporting both permanent and temporary works delivery while providing assurance to the construction teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and engineering oversight of all construction activities on site

  • Work closely with the Construction Director on day-to-day engineering matters

  • Review and accept RAMS (WPPs) and ITPs

  • Lead and manage the execution and coordination of temporary works, including managing a team of Temporary Works Coordinators

  • Oversee coordination and integration of permanent and temporary works designs

  • Provide technical support and guidance on:

    • SCEW matters

    • NCRs

    • Short Notice Changes (TQs / FCRs)

    • Materials approvals and shop drawing reviews

    • Temporary works design reviews

    • Testing and materials management

  • Ensure timely and accurate redlining of approved design changes

  • Support and lead technical assurance activities including audits, surveillance, and HS2 Technical Assurance Reviews

  • Manage construction support services in line with contractual requirements

  • Agree and implement a risk-based approach to reviewing temporary works designs and shop drawings

  • Monitor performance of the construction support team, including forecasting, performance reviews, and resource planning

  • Hold responsibility for budgetary control and cost forecasting related to construction support services

About You

  • Strong experience delivering major civil engineering and infrastructure projects

  • Previous experience in an Engineering Manager or similar senior engineering role

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or Construction Management

  • Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer

  • Strong coordination and workload management skills

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle

  • SMSTS certified

  • CSCS card (White / White-Yellow / Red Experienced / Gold / Black)
