Our client require an Environmental Advisor to join the tunnels and viaducts section of HS2.

You will be based from site 4 days a week (Uxbridge area) and required to go to their offices in Euston 1 day a week until they are on site full time (12 months).

You will be responsible for monitoring compliance with project consents, environmental permits, legislation, assistance in the delivery of the EMS, Environmental Clerk of Works, ecological supervision and mitigation. Ensuring best practise in environmental management across all the C1 sites.  The Environmental Advisors role combines an understanding of the natural environment and construction processes.

The Environmental Advisor will provide support to the Senior Environmental Manager, the Environmental and Suitability Lead and to Site Managers.

Responsibilities

The Environmental Advisor will be responsible for:

  • the day to day environmental supervision of works on various sites;
  • Supporting the Senior Environmental Manger with the delivery of all measures detailed in the Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and supporting method statements, including inspection of the works on the sites;
  • preventing and reporting on environmental incidents; 
  • liaising with the contractor and subcontractors;
  • overseeing and quality-control of the implementation of the environmental and ecological tasks undertaken on site throughout the proposed developments to ensure a consistent approach is adopted in applying the measures detailed in the EMPs and supporting information; 
  • gathering KPI information from subcontractors for the Senior Environmental Manager on a weekly and monthly basis;
  • conducting Tool-box talks or other environmental and ecological briefings with the contractors; 
  • assisting with the production of fortnightly environment and ecological articles for the Weekly Communication e-mail;
  • monitoring all noise and vibration equipment;
  • undertaking other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.

Skills & Experience

Key tasks will be in one or more of the service areas below, depending on the project’s programme, and the Environment Advisor’s experience:

  • environmental management: conducting site inspections; preparing and reviewing RAMS; assisting with audits; conducting daily and weekly site inspections, collecting and analysing performance data; KPI reporting; advising project and site teams on environmental issues;
  • environmental management system (EMS) development: assisting the Environment Team to achieve an effective, certified EMS (to e.g. ISO14001:2015); conducting gap analyses; writing procedures; conducting internal audits and liaising with HS2 auditors;
  • ecology services: assisting ecologists with habitat and protected species field surveys; report writing; and analysing data; and
  • undertaking any other duties as appropriate to the post and to works on site.

Qualifications and experience should include:

  • educated to degree level in civil engineering or environment management (or similar);
  • aware of regulatory, legislative and company requirements;
  • auditing experience;
  • Membership of IEMA, CIEEM, IES or equivalent environmental organisation;
  • CSCS Card holder or working towards it;
  • From IEMA Environmental Skills Map:
    • understand environmental and sustainability principles and their relationship with organisations;
    • explain environmental policy issues;
    • describe environmental management and assessment tools and their application;
    • explain key environmental legislation and compliance measures;
    • collect, analyse, and report information and data;
    • analyse problems and opportunities to deliver sustainable solutions;
    • identify and engage in two-way communication with stakeholders;
    • implement environmental management and/or assessment tools; and
    • develop programmes to deliver environmental performance improvement.
