Our client a major JV is delivering the construction of the Chiltern tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct which are the two of the most eye-catching and challenging engineering projects on the HS2 route. .
Project information:

  • The iconic Colne Valley Viaduct which is a “structure of international significance”; 3+ km long and spanning the lakes of the Colne Valley (architectural images can be found online).
  • Chiltern Tunnels – 2 x 16km long tunnels through the Chiltern Hills
  • Western Valley Slopes (South Portal) – 2.5km of earthworks including the TBM launching portal and main compound in Maple Cross housing the TBM plant and equipment, main offices and tunnel/viaduct pre cast yards
  • 5 x Ventilation Shafts at Chalfont St. Peter, Chalfont St. Giles, Amersham, Little Missenden and Chesham. Shaft depth between 35m-65m with diaphragm walls up to 80m deep. Headhouses at each location.

Responsibilities:

  • Work within a team of H&S and Occupational Health and Hygiene Advisors to support Delivery Team for the Tunnelling, Shaft and associated construction and civil engineering activities.
  • Understand the JV Policies and Procedures and statutory requirements as they affect the operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented.
  • Liaise with Emergency Service personnel in the preparedness of emergency rescue, response and incident management relating to tunnelling and civil engineering work
  • Support the Occupational Health and Hygiene function within the JV ensuring appropriate support is available for the scope of works associated with tunnelling and civil engineering activities
  • Provide professional specialist H&S advice to project delivery and management teams including monitoring the implementation of, parent company and client policies, standards and procedures.
  • Ensure that Inspection and reporting of H&S standards on site is in line with customer requirements. Mentor and assist project teams on standards of project H&S inspection and corrective action
  • Assist the delivery teams and Health and Safety Manager: Tunnels in preparing and developing the Framework and worksite Construction Phase Plan (CPP) and coordinate reviews.
  • Facilitate H&S cascades and briefing of information including delivery of awareness and training programmes
  • Liaise with supply chain to monitor and improve performance in support of the JV Aim High cultural development philosophy
  • To support the H&S function in the development and implementation of Integrated Management Systems and their continual improvement
  • When directed, assist with the preparation of H&S risk assessments and Method Statements, Work Package Plans (WPP's) and Task Briefing Sheets (TBS)
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of H&S training courses, as directed.
  • Incident investigation and facilitation of the reporting process in support of project’s delivery and Executive Management team
  • Actively promote and assist the delivery of the JV and Client campaigns in addition to the implementation of best practice principles across the project, to include stakeholders such as the supply chain.
  • Assist with the monitoring and reporting of the JV H&S performance as directed.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for both internal and client representatives when discussing H&S matters, including attendance at H&S meetings and facilitation support at worksite H&S meetings in support of their JV values and their JV Delivery philosophy
  • Maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relation to H&S management and responsibilities including appropriate qualification and professional membership
  • Support worksite teams in the provision of information and project data to H&S Databases

 
Behaviours, Skills & Experience:

  • Industry Safety qualification equivalent to NEBOSH Construction Certificate or Safety and Health Vocational qualification
  • Tech IOSH member of the institution of Occupational Safety and Health
  • Ability to develop working relationships in project teams
  • Work to deadlines
  • Ability to write technical report and investigation wiring including root cause analysis
