Carmichaels are seeking a Sub Agent to work with a Tier 1 company on a major highways project in Birmingham. The successful candidate will have previous Tier 1 experience working on a smart motorway project.
Key Responsibilities

- Prioritize the wellbeing of your engineers
- Communicate effectively with other engineers, supervisors, enabling functions, designers, and client representatives.
- Contribute to an effective working environment for your team.
- Ensure language and behaviours are respectful and professional
- Feedback to team on how we can make the workplace more pleasant for everyone. Solicit feedback from your site engineers.
- Support and encourage development of your site engineers
- Design
- Review designs and raise any queries to the design team via TQs
- Generate Temporary Works Design Briefs to the acceptance of the TWC
- Production of red-line drawings for your works.
- Programme and planning
- Produce the project short term lookahead programme weekly for your works.
- Ensure short term programmes submitted by suppliers
- Work with the site engineers and supervisors to manage any clashes with other site works.
- Ensure progress is recorded and compare it to planned production for your section.
- Communicate your plan for the next 2-3 months to the wider project team
- Plan and chair ‘readiness reviews’ for your activities
- Commercial
- Ensure site engineers keep an accurate and detailed site record for all works in your section.
- Raise requisitions for plant and materials in a timely and accurate manor.
- Understand the subcontract scope of works and budget and ensure that this is followed by the suppliers.
- Manage hired plant and equipment costs to stay in line with your budget.
- Contribute to the cost forecasts for any plant and materials in your section.
- Quality
- Understand the design specifications and drawings for your section. Challenge where relevant.
- Generate Inspection and Test Plans for your works. Ensure the ITPs are briefed out effectively to the team. Monitor the ITP for any revisions that may be required.
- Ensure quality records are captured and stored correctly.
- Identify Non-Conformances and Defects and ensure they are promptly reported & closed out.
- Generate material approvals and benchmarks.
- Arrange and coordinate quality inspections with 3rd parties.
- Safety
- Collaborate with others to plan your works to minimise health and safety hazards.
- Generate Risk Assessments and Method Statements for your works, ensuring that people identify and appropriately mitigate health and safety hazards. Arrange and lead Hazard ID meetings for the works.
- Raise and administer permits you are appointed to deal with
- Raise observations and encourage others to do so
- Complete safety inspections and ensure the actions are closed out.
- Set and maintain clear expectations for health and safety with your team and suppliers working on your section.
- Be familiar with and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety Policies and procedures.

- Collaborate with others to plan your works to minimise environmental hazards.
- Understand Risk Assessments and Method Statements for your works, ensuring that people identify and appropriately mitigate health and safety hazards.
