Location: Plymouth, Devon
Hours: 50 hours per week (07:00 – 17:00)
Contract: Long-term project
Clearance: BPSS required (UK residency for past 5 years)

About the Role

Carmichael UK is recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a major infrastructure redevelopment project at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth. This is an exciting opportunity to work on one of the UK’s most significant and complex engineering schemes within a highly regulated environment.

You’ll play a key role in supporting the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical systems for critical infrastructure, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and review of mechanical design documentation, specifications, and drawings.

  • Work collaboratively with consultants, contractors, and client representatives to ensure coordinated design delivery.

  • Attend design and progress meetings both on-site and off-site.

  • Provide technical input and problem-solving support for mechanical systems and installations.

  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards, regulations, and project specifications.

  • Liaise with electrical, civil, structural, and architectural teams to maintain integrated design solutions.

  • Contribute to innovative mechanical engineering solutions within a highly controlled and safety-critical environment.

This is a hybrid role, typically working four days per week on-site and one day remotely.

About You

  • Qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (HNC, BSc, MSc, BEng, or MEng).

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer within building services or infrastructure projects.

  • Sound understanding of design documentation and mechanical systems such as HVAC, pipework, and plant systems.

  • Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Hevacomp (or similar).

  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of RIBA and BSRIA Design Stage Deliverables.

  • Experience working in defence, nuclear, or other highly regulated industries.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the site, BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) clearance is required.
Applicants must:

  • Hold a valid passport from a NATO or MISWG member country.

  • Have lived in the UK continuously for the past 5 years.
