Planning Engineer – Concrete Works(Permanent)

Location: Devonport Docks, Plymouth
Salary: Flexible DOE + package
Employer: Carmichael UK

Carmichael UK are recruiting on behalf of a leading concrete contractor delivering major works at Devonport Royal Dockyard. This is a permanent opportunity for an accomplished Planning Engineer with a strong engineering background and hands-on experience working for Tier 1 or principal contractors on comparable heavy civil engineering or marine infrastructure schemes.

The Role

As the Planning Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery team with the development, monitoring and reporting of detailed construction programmes. Working closely with project managers, engineers, and commercial teams, you will ensure accurate sequencing, resource planning, and progress measurement across complex concrete and structural packages.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage and update fully logic-linked construction programmes using industry-standard planning software (e.g. P6, Asta).
  • Work collaboratively with engineering and site teams to ensure programme feasibility and accurate sequencing.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and recommend mitigation measures to maintain productivity and project milestones.
  • Produce clear progress reports, dashboards, and look-aheads for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support change management, including the evaluation of delays and programme impacts.
  • Contribute to planning input for tenders, methodology, and delivery strategy where required.

Required Experience

  • Must have an engineering background (civil, construction, structural, or similar).
  • Proven track record working as a Planner for the contractor, not the client/consultant.
  • Experience with Tier 1 or principal contractors on major civil engineering projects—ideally heavy civils, marine, defence, or complex concrete works.
  • Strong working knowledge of P6 or Asta Powerproject.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience working on high-security or high-complexity sites is advantageous.

Why Apply?

  • Opportunity to join a respected concrete contractor delivering mission-critical works at one of the UK’s most significant defence infrastructure projects.
  • Permanent staff role with a flexible, negotiable salary and full benefits package.
  • Long-term career prospects with continued investment in professional development.
