Our client who is delivering the HS2 Tunnels and Viaduct project is entering into the construction phase.
They require a Tunnel Precast Manager to be responsible for the design and construction of the precast factory and the production of the tunnel precast segments of the section C1.
There are 16 000 rings (112 000 segments – 382 000m3 of concrete) to produce over 3 years.
The Tunnel precast yard scope of works includes:
  • The design, procurement & supply, construction & removal of the tunnel precast facilities (Carousels, moulds, gantry cranes,…)
  • The segments production, their storage & delivery to the Tunnel Boring Machines

The role requires a high level of interfacing between internal departments, multiple subcontractors and suppliers.

Responsibilities

The Tunnel Precast Manager will be responsible for:

  • Being the principal point of contact responsible for all the technical, production and quality issues during the design, preparation, construction and production phases.
  • Leading a team of site engineers and site supervisors and coordinating the potential on-site teams.
  • Coordinating and managing the subcontractors on site.
  • Reviewing interfaces with adjacent activities and ensuring that they are properly coordinated and communicated
  • Organising and leading regular site progress meetings with all involved parties to monitor progress, quality and safety, ensuring the Project Manager/Project Director are updated on all issues.
  • Participating in the daily activity briefing and weekly sub-contractor coordination meetings to ensure that areas under their responsibility are kept on programme.
  • Working with the commercial team to review the packages tender information and subcontracts and comment where appropriate
  • Working with the procurement team to supply the required equipment and materials.
  • Providing specialist advice on the design of the tunnel precast facilities and on the technical choices of the production equipment.
  • Promoting the setting up and the methodologies used in the operation of the assembly line/carousel.
  • Ensuring that the equipment purchased, installed and commissioned comply with the BS and EN standards.
  • Reviewing all relevant drawings relating to the scope of works and assessing/advising on build-ability and product selection
  • Producing, reviewing and approving (as and when authorised) Inspection & Test Plans (I&TP)
  • Monitoring the implementation of the I&TPs
  • Preparing Material Approval Requests (MAR’s) for all tunnel segments products and submit for approval.
  • Coordinating and assisting the concrete manager to ensure that all the required approvals, tests, are implemented by the concrete supplier
  • Ensuring that the suppliers and teams maintains the on-going compliance of all products and related approvals.
  • Ensuring that the teams and sub-contractors are working to the latest design information and providing technical advice and support where required
  • Ensuring quality construction standards and suitable construction techniques are adopted and maintained in order to provide a defect free end product.
  • Ensuring continual improvement of all the production steps of the tunnel precast segments.
  • Working with the Project Control team to develop and detail the site installations programme and then develop the reporting tools of the works progress to the top management.
  • Ensuring that method, sequence and resource required to deliver the activities are thoroughly planned, programmed and delivered
  • Producing and maintaining 3 weeks look ahead programmes

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 7 to 10 years’ experience in the construction industry or working in the manufacturing industry managing an assembly line.
  • Proven experience in highly technical packages management, from design to commissioning.
  • Proven experience in leading teams
  • A good practical understanding of Health & Safety requirements
  • Strong communication skills with good interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Ability to prioritise, plan, schedule and evaluate works
  • Ability to prepare long term programmes with assistance of project planner

Qualifications:

  • Essential / Degree in civil engineering construction management or Degree in mechanical/electrical engineering management
  • Essential / CSCS Card holder.
  • Desirable / Membership of construction or manufacturing industry professional body
