As a Principal Ecological Consultant you will ensure your team is aligned with the company’s vision and values. You will distribute work throughout the team and provide support, where required. You will be responsible for your team’s financial performance and utilization rates. You will play a key role in maintaining relationships with existing clients and developing relationships with potential clients.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supervision, support and leadership of team members;
  • Assist the sales and marketing team in winning new work, particularly large contracts;
  • Assist the Associate Director or Regional Manager in various tasks, including reporting of financial performance and projections;
  • Project manage large and complex projects;
  • Undertake technically complex project work, including EPSL applications, EcIA chapters and habitat regulation assessments.
  • Competently review and approve deliverables produced by others;
  • Be a role model in attitude, behaviour and loyalty to junior members of the company and inspire the confidence of the board of directors;
  • Produce high quality deliverables for clients, within allocated time and budget constraints;
  • Be competent to act as an expert witness at inquiries;
  • Develop and maintain good client relationships;
  • Maintain a positive, solution-focused approach to your work;
  • Adhere to Thomson Ecology’s policies and procedures, including those outlined within the Staff Handbook and Project Management Handbook;
  • Work in accordance with safety documentation and never undertake work which puts the safety of yourself or others at risk;
  • Maintain a focus on continual personal development by achieving personal objectives and improving knowledge of ecology, legislation and survey techniques;
  • Take responsibility for the standard of survey work by leading the field team;
  • Follow the correct channels of communication by including project managers and team leads in all relevant communication; 
  • Be responsible for the motivation and development of team members and manage disciplinary matters when issues arise; and
  • Undertake any other tasks and responsibilities as instructed by your line manager. 

Requirements

  • A degree or postgraduate degree in ecology or a closely related subject (an MSc in ecology or a closely related subject desirable).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise reports.
  • An in-depth knowledge of ecology, legislation, and survey techniques and an enthusiasm for keeping up to date with new technologies and best practice guidelines
  • Considerable experience in writing technical proposals, reports, Environmental Statement (ES) chapters, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA)
  • Line management experience
  • Planning and delivering ecological mitigation/compensation measures
  • A minimum of one protected species licence
  • Capable of working under pressure with the ability to meet critical deadlines
  • Creative approach to delivering ecological projects
  • An enthusiastic, flexible, can-do work attitude
  • A positive outlook and a strong desire to succeed
  • Full membership of CIEEM 
  • A full UK driving licence and use of a car
