I’m looking for a Project Engineer to work on Temp-to-perm basis on a canal job in Gloucestershire. This is a great opportunity to work in a beautiful location for a company that offers quick and rewarding progression.

Overall purpose of the post

To prepare drawings and documents

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • To prepare CAD engineering drawings for construction of volunteer-led project elements.
  • To liaise, interact and coordinate with the ‘project architect’
  • To prepare drawings, diagrams and Design and Access Statements to assist in Planning Applications and Invitations to Tenders (ITT)
  • To create and maintain an asset register for the project.
  • To provide general support including assisting with the creation of documents to support progress reports and fundraising.

 1 Technical

  • To prepare CAD engineering drawings and technical diagrams, as required.
  • To take off quantities from drawings and prepare bills of material from them.
  • To review drawings of existing structures and cross-check that proposed designs are not in conflict with them. Where any conflicts might exist, to bring these to the attention of the Principal Designer.
  • To be aware at all times of the safety implications of design details. This includes their safety of construction as well as their subsequent operation.
  • To plot field surveys of the canal and its structures as required
  • To prepare drawings and diagrams for the purposes of Planning Applications
  • To prepare draft Design and Access Statements for Planning Applications.

 2 Management

  • To assist the Principal Designer.
  • To work with the ‘project architect’.
  • To schedule the preparation of drawings and documents in an orderly manner, as agreed with the Principal Designer. To advise him of likely bottlenecks in preparation and discuss possible solutions.
  • To archive existing drawings received, to index them and store them for cross-reference.
  • To keep new drawings and documents neatly stored, indexed and accessible on demand.
  • To create and maintain an asset register for the whole project.
  • To ensure that all key documents and drawings are available in widely accessible electronic formats.
  • To make regular back-ups of documentation stored in electronic form.
  • To print drawings and documents as required.
  • To manage personal time in a productive manner.

Communication

  • To keep the Principal Designer informed of progress with drawing/document production.
  • To liaise with the engineering and drawing office staff of the contractors on the contractor-delivered elements of the project.
  • To work with the CCT volunteer engineering management team and individual sub-project managers on the volunteer-led project elements.

Finance

  • To be aware of the cost implications of all details shown on drawings, and to be in regular communication with the ‘project architect’ and the Principal Designer to ensure that economical solutions are found.
  • To cost up the bills of material prepared from engineering drawings.

General

  • To ensure that at all times project delivery informs, reflects and supports the prevailing aims and objectives of the Project Director and the Project Board.
  • To work with colleagues across the various organisations involved as required in support of project goals.
  • To perform other duties as reasonably correspond with the general character of the post and are commensurate with its level of responsibility.

Engineering

  • To prepare, and assist with the preparation of, engineering designs for all the project works which will be volunteer-led, some involving specialist sub-contractors. Designs will be prepared to recognized standards, supported by sufficient documentation to allow independent checking.
  • To review the main design elements of the work in the sub-projects executed by external contractors.
  • To make best use of the existing expertise within CCT and other Core Partners.
  • To assume CDM responsibility for these designs.
  • To prepare suitable drawings, specifications and Bills of Quantities for these designs.
  • To coordinate these designs with those prepared by the contractor-led elements of the project.
  • To monitor the progress and execution of in-house designed projects.
  • To ensure that engineering designs are capable of safe execution and safe subsequent operation.
  • To prepare regulatory applications as necessary for individual projects; for example Flood Defence consents.
  • To design temporary works as necessary, bearing in mind all statutory regulations concerning health and safety.
  • At the completion of each volunteer-let project element, to prepare as-built drawings for archival purposes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 6 (Degree level) or higher.
  • Membership of a professional institution (Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status).
  • A current Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate.

Preferred experience of:

  • General civil engineering works.
  • Project management, planning and risk assessment.
  • Supervision of assistant staff.
  • Operation of Health and Safety legislation.
  • One year or more experience as a CAD operator.
  • Familiarity with construction costs and computerized spreadsheet analysis.
  • Managing own work schedule, drawing production and filing.
  • Familiarity with the preparation of Planning Applications.
