About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join a growing civil engineering and groundworks contractor delivering projects across Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and the surrounding areas. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially focused professional with a strong background in civils and groundworks to take ownership of multiple projects from tender through to final account.

The successful candidate will play a key role in managing project costs, maximising profitability, and ensuring commercial success while working closely with operational teams, clients, subcontractors, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the commercial aspects of civil engineering and groundworks projects.
  • Prepare, review, and negotiate subcontract agreements.
  • Produce accurate cost reports, forecasts, and CVRs.
  • Measure and value works completed on site.
  • Prepare and submit applications for payment.
  • Assess and manage subcontractor payments and variations.
  • Identify, value, and agree compensation events and claims.
  • Monitor project costs and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
  • Support procurement activities and supplier negotiations.
  • Prepare and agree final accounts with clients and subcontractors.
  • Maintain strong relationships with project teams and clients.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual requirements and company procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering and groundworks.
  • Strong understanding of NEC and other standard forms of contract.
  • Experience working on projects involving:
    • Groundworks
    • Earthworks
    • Drainage
    • Foundations
    • Roads and Highways
    • Infrastructure Works
    • Utilities
    • External Works
  • Strong commercial and contractual awareness.
  • Experience producing CVRs, valuations, variations, and final accounts.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and commercial management systems.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • Degree or HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline.
  • Experience working for a specialist groundworks or civil engineering contractor.
  • Working knowledge of NEC contracts.
  • Membership of RICS or studying towards professional qualification.
