Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer to join the HS2 project at Chipping Warden, working predominantly on highways and drainage works. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a defined section of works, ensuring construction activities are delivered safely, to programme, and in full compliance with HS2, highway authority, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Take engineering responsibility for a designated section of highways and drainage works
- Manage and coordinate site engineers, subcontractors, and direct labour within the section
- Ensure works are carried out in accordance with drawings, specifications, and HS2 requirements
- Oversee setting out, quality assurance, and as-built records for highways and drainage assets
- Review and manage RAMS, permits, and ITPs for works under your control
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards at all times
- Liaise with design teams, planners, temporary works coordinators, and HS2 stakeholders
- Resolve technical and construction issues and raise RFIs where required
- Monitor progress against programme and support short-term planning
- Assist with inspections, handovers, and section completion documentation
- Ensure materials, workmanship, and installation meet specification and adoptable standards
Highways & Drainage Scope
- Earthworks and formation
- Pavement construction (sub-base, base, surfacing)
- Kerbing, footways, and carriageways
- Surface water and foul drainage systems
- Attenuation systems, manholes, headwalls, and outfalls
- Section 38 / adoptable highways works (where applicable)
Requirements & Qualifications
- HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
- Proven experience as a Section Engineer on major infrastructure or highways projects
- Strong background in highways and drainage works
- Experience working on HS2 or similar large-scale infrastructure projects (preferred)
- CSCS card (relevant level)
- SMSTS (preferred)
- Temporary Works Supervisor/Coordinator (desirable)

- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and engineering software
