Carmichael UK are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Section Engineer (Structures) to join the HS2 delivery team in Northamptonshire. You will be responsible for the delivery of structural works for a major viaduct section, ensuring compliance with design, quality, safety, and programme requirements. You will act as the lead interface between design, construction, and site teams, driving forward construction of complex structural elements and ensuring all works align with HS2 technical and safety standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the detailed structural execution of viaduct works: foundations, piers, deck units, bearings, expansion joints, drainage related to structure etc.

  • Interpret structural design drawings (including CAD / BIM) and specification, ensuring clarity and practical implementation.

  • Liaise with design engineers to resolve technical and constructability issues; lead design workshop reviews where required.

  • Prepare and monitor construction method statements, temporary works designs, lifting plans, and ensure compliance with CDM / Health & Safety regulations.

  • Oversee contractors and subcontractors responsible for structural concrete, steelwork, prestressing, post-tensioning, formwork and reinforcement.

  • Conduct site inspections and quality checks; ensure that materials, workmanship and installations meet HS2 / British Standards / project quality criteria.

  • Coordinate with the programme team to ensure structure deliverables are on programme; identify and mitigate delays.

  • Maintain robust documentation: risk registers, site diaries, progress reports, QA/QC records.


Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven understanding of bridge and viaduct structural elements

  • Experience working with contractors, subcontractors and multi disciplinary design teams in a large civil engineering / railway / infrastructure environment.

  • Strong technical knowledge of reinforced concrete, prestressed / post-tensioned concrete, steelwork, composite structures.

  • Proven ability to produce method statements, supervision plans, construction sequencing, risk assessments.

  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
