Carmichael UK is working with a leading Tier 1 civil engineering contractor delivering the HS2 project in Birmingham. We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer to take responsibility for key packages of earthworks, drainage, and landscaping works on this nationally significant infrastructure scheme.
The Role
As Section Engineer, you will manage a defined section of works, providing technical leadership and ensuring delivery is achieved safely, to programme, and in line with quality requirements. This role will suit an engineer with strong coordination skills and experience managing multi-discipline civil engineering packages.
Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of a defined section of works covering earthworks, drainage, and landscaping

Manage bulk earthworks, cut & fill, formation, and associated activities

Oversee drainage works including deep drainage, culverts, and attenuation systems

Coordinate hard and soft landscaping works and manage interfaces with adjacent packages

Provide technical guidance to Site Engineers and subcontractors

Ensure works comply with drawings, specifications, method statements, and ITPs

Oversee setting out, QA documentation, inspections, and as-built records

Support short-term planning, progress reporting, and problem-solving

Maintain high standards of health, safety, quality, and environmental compliance
About You

Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering

Proven experience as a Section Engineer on major civil or infrastructure projects

Strong background in earthworks and drainage; landscaping experience advantageous

Experience working for a Tier 1 or major civil engineering contractor

Confident managing engineers and coordinating subcontractors

CSCS card essential; SMSTS desirable
