Section Engineer – Major Civil Engineering Project

Location: Plymouth
Contract: Long-term / Freelance (Inside IR35) or Permanent (depending on preference)
Security Clearance: Required – applicants must be UK Nationals

Overview

Carmichael UK has an exciting opportunity for experienced Section Engineers to join the delivery team on a prestigious long-term civil engineering project in Plymouth.

You will take responsibility for all engineering activities within your section of works, leading and mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring works are delivered safely, accurately, and in line with quality and programme requirements. The role covers both self-delivered and subcontracted works.


The Role

As a Section Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Full responsibility for engineering delivery within your section of works

  • Managing and mentoring engineers under your control

  • Providing technical input into:

    • RAMS

    • Temporary Works briefs

    • ITPs

    • Weekly progress and planning updates

    • NCRs, TQs, and Early Warnings


Key Accountabilities

  • SHE performance at site level, supporting the Line Manager

  • Quality performance, ensuring standards of workmanship and documentation are met

  • Accuracy of engineering control and dimensional compliance

  • Effective management and coordination of the site engineering team


Dimensional Control & Setting Out

  • Ensure timely and accurate dimensional control of works

  • Provide, check, and verify setting-out for direct delivery and subcontracted works

  • Establish and maintain clear and accurate setting-out on site

  • Communicate setting-out requirements clearly to site and subcontract teams

  • Set-out works in advance to allow time for independent checks

  • Maintain long-term control points and project stations

  • Ensure all survey equipment is correctly calibrated and tested


Quality

  • Produce and implement Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) for your section

  • Ensure quality inspections are completed and records maintained

  • Raise and manage RFIs and Technical Queries (TQs)

  • Contribute to the production of as-built documentation

  • Maintain accurate site records including diaries, photographs, and marked-up drawings

  • Ensure compliance with the project Quality Management System

  • Maintain and collate quality records

  • Raise, manage, and close out Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)

  • Support delivery of overall project quality objectives within the Site Management Plan (SMP)


Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Ensure safe working practices within your section of the site

  • Apply all HSEQS policies and procedures

  • Act as Existing Services Coordinator where required

  • Act as Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) where appointed

  • Ensure all required permits are in place and adhered to

  • Input into the production, review, and monitoring of RAMS

  • Actively engage in safety initiatives and behavioural safety programmes

  • Provide input into health & safety plans, risk assessments, method statements, and task briefings


Programme & Planning

  • Develop and manage the short- to medium-term programme for your section of works

  • Provide accurate progress updates to support reporting and planning activities


About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)

  • 5+ years’ experience in a civil engineering environment

  • Working towards Professional / Chartered certification

  • Strong technical and organisational skills

  • Good knowledge of engineering requirements and site processes

  • Ability to produce:

    • Work Package Plans

    • Task Briefing Sheets

    • Safe Systems of Work

  • UK National, eligible for security clearance
