Carmichael are recruiting for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager, to join a tier one contractor, on a large scale, complex MOD project.

The Senior Engineering Manager (SEM) will be responsible for packages within Process Plant & Equipment on a large complex delivery project; these packages are typically in the manufacturing / site installation phases.

The PP&E Engineering team manages various suppliers in the design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of Process Plant & Equipment (PP&E) packages. Experience of lifting / hoists / mechanical handling, vacuum & X-ray equipment design, installation, & handover within a nuclear and/or high hazard industry is desirable.

The SEM will lead the PP&E Engineering Package, managing Engineering Managers, Design Engineers and working closely with the Package Manager

Active SC clearance is a MUST for this psoition. 5 years continuous residency in the UK and UK Citizenship is required. 

 

About the role - 

The role involves being seconded into the client and acting on the client’s behalf. Commercial awareness will be key to enabling successful client contracts, with project management assistance. Being personal and professional is critical for building relationships with key stakeholders and the supply chain.

SEMs are responsible for ensuring the design is developed in a manner that maintains the design intent. The SEM is required to have a good understanding of the design intent requirements and manage their delivery through to verification. The SEM is also to be able to demonstrate the correct process has been followed in the design generation including but not limited to, the engagement of stakeholders, collation of comments and generation of design review presentations.

The SEM is responsible for the prioritisation and management of the team working in the discipline field listed above. The SEM can also review responses to Tolerance updated / On Site Change Requests / Technical Queries / Commissioning Reservation so long as they are SQEP (Suitably Qualified Experienced Person) to do so.

 

Responsibilities -

General Responsibilities 

  • Liaison and reporting to the Principal Engineering Manager.
  • Reporting, planning, and justifying key Engineering delivery items to Engineering Leadership Team.
  • Managing, strategizing, and planning the review process of Supplier deliverables.
  • Certificate of Design updates and review of engineering management process documentation to enable this.
  • Aiding the development of less experienced Engineers and Engineering Managers through formal and informal mentoring/coaching.
  • Liaison with Package Manager to ensure Design deliverables are being prioritised.
  • Liaison with Supply Chain Engineering Management to enable supplier Engineering delivery.
  • Liaison with the client's Technical Authorities for Design Reviews and deliverable checking.
  • Mechanical, Control and Instrumentation engineer tasking.
  • Management of the package Engineering Managers and Design Engineers.
  • Management of Engineering Change Requests, Design Change Notes, Technical Queries, concession, reservation closure in addition to managing commissioning reservation engineering responses.
  • Technical Query SQEP check (if suitably SQEP) and determination if a Design Change Note is required.
  • Assisting Supplier Construction teams with engineering challenges and bottlenecks.
  • Point of contact for PP&E Packages Engineering challenges for the Supply Chain and other internal departments.
  • Design Review Meeting planning, presentation, and facilitation.
  • Wider project stakeholder management and consultation.
  • Supplier visits during critical activities and meetings.

 

Requirements for this position -

  • Engineering qualification
  • Installation experience of Process Plant & Equipment within the nuclear sector
  • Mechanical Engineering background would be beneficial
  • Ability to deliver engineering across an equivalent manufacturing and/or research environment comprising a range of infrastructure facilities and associated manufacturing and/or research plant and equipment
  • Extensive experience of working in a highly regulated environment (preferably nuclear)
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering complex engineering projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team
