Planning, Senior Planner

Permanent
Circa £70k/a to £100k/a neg.

Our client is looking to recruit an experienced Senior Planner to join the delivery team on a major, long-term civil engineering project valued in excess of £100m.

This is a key planning position supporting a complex five-year construction programme incorporating major earthworks, structures and marine works.

This position would particularly suit an experienced Planner or Senior Planner who started their career in site engineering/construction delivery before moving into planning.

The combination of site experience and planning expertise is important. We need someone who can look beyond activities on a P6 programme, understand how the works will actually be constructed, challenge sequencing and methodology, and build a credible programme from the ground up.

The position offers a salary of £70,000 to £100,000 per annum plus package, with the final offer determined by the candidate's experience, technical capability and expertise.

As Senior Planner, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining and managing the construction programme throughout the project lifecycle, working closely with the project management, engineering and commercial teams.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing detailed baseline programmes from first principles, rather than simply maintaining an existing programme.
  • Creating and managing the programme for a five-year, £100m+ major civil engineering project.
  • Planning complex construction activities across earthworks, structures and marine works.
  • Developing realistic construction sequences based upon site methodology, resources, access, logistics and interfaces.
  • Producing and maintaining programmes using Primavera P6 or equivalent industry-standard planning software.
  • Monitoring progress against the approved baseline and identifying potential programme risks, delays and critical activities.
  • Updating, reviewing and challenging construction programmes as the works progress.
  • Working closely with site teams to ensure programmes accurately reflect project delivery and construction methodology.
  • Supporting programme reporting, forecasting and look-ahead planning.
  • Applying a strong working knowledge of NEC contracts within the planning and programme management process.

To be considered, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • A relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a closely related construction discipline.
  • At least 5 years' site management/delivery experience gained within positions such as Site Engineer, Section Engineer, Sub Agent and/or Agent.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience working as a Planning Engineer/Planner on civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
  • Proven ability to develop baseline programmes from first principles.
  • The technical and practical capability to develop and manage the programme for a complex £100m+ civil engineering project over a circa five-year delivery period.
  • Strong experience of Primavera P6 or equivalent planning software.
  • Experience planning major works involving earthworks and structures, with marine experience highly advantageous.
  • Good working knowledge of NEC contracts.
  • The ability to understand construction methodology, sequencing, interfaces and programme risk from both a site delivery and planning perspective.
  • Willingness and ability to work on site in Oxford three days per week.

The successful candidate will combine strong planning and programming expertise with a genuine site delivery background. We are particularly interested in candidates who have progressed from engineering and construction management positions into planning and therefore understand how major civil engineering projects are actually built.
