Our client a major JV who is delivering part of HS2 are seeking a Senior Planner to take responsibility for planning duties.

The section of works is the Colne Valley Viaduct, adjoining embankments and ATFS facility. The Planner will become a key member of the ten strong Planning Team on this prestigious HS2 project. The Planner will report to the Planning Manager and will work within the Project Control’s function of the JV team.
A key function of the role will be to attend construction team meetings and become embedded within this team to provide planning and programme services and advice. This coordination is key to understand the issues and interfaces that impact the programme. This will enable the accurate reporting of progress information and the reliability and robustness of the forecast Clause 32 programme that is produced monthly.
The Planner will be required to be competent and develop their communication skills regarding project planning and controls, performance measurement to key stakeholders, colleagues, HS2 Ltd as the client and trades contractors as necessary.
The candidate should have a working knowledge of the NEC conditions of contract and understanding of the early warning & compensation event process.
The Planner will be able to work independently, be organized, flexible, have excellent communication skills, be self-reliant, a team player, collaborative and have first class interpersonal management skills.  
The Planner will be a key member of the planning team, providing first class planning and controls functional support to meet business objectives.
 
The Role 
The role will require the ability to: -

  • use Primavera P6 planning software. The applicant must be competent in its use. The software is hosted on a cloud based system and experience of this arrangement would be beneficial (if not relevant training will be provided)
  • update the Clause 32 programme activities under your responsibility with progress information in order to produce an accurate forecast programme
  • produce barcharts, comparison against baselines, S curves, histograms and written narrative as required to convey progress information. This includes carrying out the weekly markup of progress information displayed within the office and boardroom for your section of responsibility
  • develop and revise the Stage 2 construction programme as new information becomes available and / or using your knowledge to develop the programme from first principles
  • develop programme what-if scenarios and provide appropriate programme advice to the construction team
  • review subcontractor’s monthly Clause 32 programmes in a timely manner and recommend acceptance or rejection giving logical reasons for your decisions
  • attend meetings and build relationships with the construction team so that you become an integral member of this team with expert knowledge of the construction programme and progress on this section
  • attend the weekly Planning Team meeting to report on progress during the week and update the team with work achievements and problems on your section
  • The Planning Team is lean and members are required to be flexible and support the Planning Manager as required, should there be a need to assist where there is a work overload in a particular area due to annual leave or for any other reason
  • Assist with mentoring the junior planners and apprentice when required

Responsibilities 
The Planner will be responsible for: 

  • complying with the JV processes and procedures
  • gaining progressive experience managing the project planning and controls function
  • seeking to continue to develop their planning skills with an increasingly detailed understanding of construction methods
  • developing the ability to maintain programmes, project control deliverables and other time related materials in conjunction with colleagues and other key stakeholders
  • maintaining good relationships with the client, professional team and supply chain
  • developing an understanding of strategic planning and project management systems
  • implementing robust project controls, accurate reporting status and forecasting
  • developing strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple activities at any one time
  • increasing ability to provide strategic advice and have an attention to detail
  • supporting all necessary project controls providing status, trends, forecasts, early warnings and exception reporting and contribute to mitigation measures to meet objectives when needed
  • developing skills to effectively plan and utilize necessary planning software to a high standard e.g. Oracle Primavera P6, Tilos, Business Collaborator (EDMS), CEMAR, eB
  • providing exemplary planning on the project and supporting staff to meet their potential.

Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to demonstrate a proven track record of working in a Planner role on site on heavy civil engineering projects
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of civil engineer construction methods, outputs and resources e.g. reinforced concrete works (viaducts, bridges, culverts), earthworks, roads, drainage, piling, sheet piling, utility works,
  • Competent in the use of Primavera P6 programming software
  • Ability to work within a team environment and autonomously
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering construction methods and techniques
  • Graduate Diploma/ Degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering
  • Relevant Construction Skills Certificate Card
  • Willingness to learn, absorb and apply detailed information from multiple sources
  • Working knowledge of the NEC conditions of contract
  • Organised, with the ability to establish priorities and manage deadlines
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to listen and challenge
  • Team player with a ‘can do’ approach and a positive attitude to change.
