Site Engineer / Engineering Surveyor

Location: Trawsfynydd, North Wales
Project: Reactor Height Reduction Project
Working Pattern: Site-based, five days per week
Sector: Nuclear / Demolition / Civil Engineering

About the Role

Carmichael UK is recruiting a Site Engineer / Engineering Surveyor to support our client on the Reactor Height Reduction Project at the Nuclear Restoration Services Trawsfynydd site in North Wales.

This 3.5-year project involves the partial demolition of the reactor buildings to reduce their overall height and ongoing asset management liability. It will also include an extensive programme of new-build and remedial civil engineering works to improve the durability of the retained structures.

This is a first-of-its-kind project within the UK nuclear sector. The successful candidate will provide surveying, dimensional control and structural verification support during complex demolition and deconstruction activities.

The role will involve monitoring the integrity, alignment, movement and stability of structural elements before, during and after cutting, lifting and removal operations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct structural monitoring surveys before, during and after demolition activities.
  • Monitor structural movement, deformation, alignment and stability.
  • Verify dimensions, weights, tolerances and structural alignment against engineering drawings.
  • Review demolition sequencing, lifting plans and temporary works designs.
  • Establish and maintain site survey control networks.
  • Provide setting-out and survey control information to subcontractors.
  • Produce survey reports, measurements and as-built records.
  • Support engineering assurance, safety case documentation and project quality records.
  • Provide technical input to ensure demolition activities comply with the approved design and methodology.
  • Work closely with the Construction Manager, Demolition Supervisors, Temporary Works Coordinator, lifting teams and engineering design teams.
  • Ensure surveying activities comply with project quality procedures, health and safety requirements and relevant regulatory standards.

Requirements

Essential

  • Experience in engineering surveying, structural monitoring or dimensional control.
  • Experience monitoring structural movement, deformation and stability.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, demolition sequences and temporary works designs.
  • Experience analysing survey data and producing technical reports.
  • Knowledge of temporary works and structural stability principles.
  • Competence in establishing and maintaining survey control.
  • Degree, HNC or HND in Civil Engineering, Surveying or a related discipline.
  • Alternatively, demonstrable engineering surveying experience within construction or demolition projects.
  • Valid CSCS card or equivalent site-access certification.

Desirable

  • Competence using modern surveying equipment, including total stations and laser scanners.
  • Experience with 3D survey modelling, point-cloud processing or BIM integration.
  • Experience supporting complex demolition or deconstruction activities.
  • Familiarity with lifting operations and load verification.
  • Chartered status or progress towards professional accreditation.
  • Temporary works or structural awareness training.
  • SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely.

About You

You will be a technically capable Site Engineer or Engineering Surveyor with strong experience in structural monitoring and dimensional control. You must be comfortable working within a safety-critical environment and collaborating with demolition, lifting, temporary works and design teams.

Previous experience within the nuclear sector would be beneficial, although candidates from complex demolition, heavy civil engineering, structural remediation or similarly regulated environments will also be considered.

Application

If you have relevant engineering surveying, structural monitoring or dimensional control experience and are interested in working on a major nuclear decommissioning project in North Wales, please apply with your latest CV.
