Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Freelance Site Engineer to join a major infrastructure project on HS2 in Brackley, supporting the delivery of highways and drainage works.

This role will suit a technically strong engineer with proven experience in setting out, QA and site coordination, working within large-scale civil engineering or infrastructure environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out setting out and surveying for highways and drainage works ensuring accuracy and compliance with design specifications
  • Deliver engineering control for works including earthworks, roads, kerbing, and drainage systems (surface water & foul)
  • Undertake quality assurance processes, including inspections, ITPs and as-built records
  • Monitor and report on progress, quality and site issues, escalating where required
  • Support the management of subcontractors and site teams to ensure delivery to programme
  • Maintain accurate site records, surveys and red-line drawings
  • Ensure full compliance with HS2 health, safety, environmental and quality standards
  • Liaise with design teams, site management and wider engineering teams to resolve technical issues and coordinate works

Scope of Works

  • Highways construction (roads, kerbs, pavements, ducting)
  • Drainage systems (manholes, gullies, pipework, attenuation systems)
  • Earthworks and associated civils packages
  • Utilities and surface infrastructure interfaces

(Aligned with typical HS2 and highways delivery packages including drainage, kerbing, and roadworks)


Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Site Engineer on major infrastructure or highways projects
  • Strong experience in drainage and highways packages
  • Ability to undertake setting out and engineering control independently
  • Experience using Total Station, GPS and survey equipment
  • Good understanding of QA processes, ITPs and as-built documentation
  • Strong communication and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Degree / HNC / HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • CSCS card (essential)
  • SMSTS or SSSTS (desirable)
  • Experience on HS2 or similar large infrastructure projects (highly desirable)
  • Full UK driving licence
