The Tunnel Square Works Engineer provides technical support to the Tunnel Engineering Manager for the design, and the engineering input during construction, for all elements of the square works / timber heading tunnels, for both permanent and temporary works.

The Tunnel Square Works Engineer will also provide support – where required – to the remainder of the Tunnel Engineering Team which involves asset protection, SCL works, and materials conformance.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Design

1.     Coordinate with the Technical Lead for the design of individual works packages as listed above 

2.     Liaise with Designers to manage the acceptance of design related deliverables

3.     Tracking design deliverables and compliance in accordance with LU S1-538

4.     Manage technical integration issues with other packages

5.     Produce design briefs for temporary and permanent works

6.     Produce survey briefings to support the design process

 

Construction

1.     Approve concrete mix designs and other materials used in the construction of the squareworks.

2.     Sign off ITPs and pre-start checklist ensuring everything is in place from a design and engineering point of view to commence a new tunnelling activity

3.     Chair Daily Review Meeting (DRM) where construction is to be reviewed. 

4.     Prepare the Squareworks RESS and complete site visits for waterproofing and secondary lining

5.     Fulfil the responsibilities of the role as per the Squareworks designer’s specification (Tunnel Engineer/Engineering Manager), Tunnelling Management Plan (DRA-8798-PLN-G-007639), the Emergency Response Plan (DRA-8798-PLN-000058), the Project Quality Plan (DRA-8798-PLN-G-000012)

6.     Completing and recording site visits / inspections

7.     Manage the design changes through the change control process.

 

Experience:

 

Mandatory

 

1.     Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically Engineering discipline (or related). A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND, may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a senior technical engineering role can be demonstrated.

2.     Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan ahead and manage own time.

3.     Previous experience in a tunnelling role, preferably similar tunnelling techniques (squareworks) and similar ground conditions (London Clay).

4.     Have excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal

5.     CSCS card

6.     Previous experience in Rail infrastructure (preferably London Underground).

 

Desirable

1.     Membership of an appropriate Professional Body, typically Chartered Member of Institute of Civil Engineering or an appropriate international equivalent professional status.  Preferably membership of the British Tunnelling Society.

2.     Previous experience in ground movement and asset protection (buildings, rail infrastructure, utilities)

3.     A good working knowledge of 

1.     BS 6164 Code of practice for health and safety in tunnelling in the construction industry,

2.     Health & Safety at Work Act 1974,

3.     Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996,

4.     Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015, 

5.     Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and

Other relevant legislation.
