Job Title: Surfacing Manager

Leading the successful biding and delivery of surfacing projects and contracts. This includes overseeing Surfacing branch functions, projects and contracts including all aspects such as commercial performance, client liaison and work programming, budget control, procurement and site management; in a profitable and efficient manner whilst complying with all appropriate legislation, company policies and procedures and industry best practice.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Project Planning:

    • Collaborate with project stakeholders to define project goals, scope, and timelines.
    • Develop detailed project plans, including resource allocation and budgeting.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and environmental standards.
  2. Team Management:

    • Recruit, train, and supervise a team of surfacing professionals, including asphalt workers and equipment operators.
    • Assign tasks, provide guidance, and conduct performance evaluations.
    • Foster a culture of safety, quality, and teamwork among the crew.
  3. Resource Management:

    • Coordinate the procurement and maintenance of surfacing equipment, materials, and resources.
    • Monitor inventory levels and ensure timely replenishment.
    • Optimize resource allocation for efficient project execution.
  4. Quality Control:

    • Implement quality control measures to ensure the highest level of workmanship.
    • Conduct regular inspections and testing to meet industry standards and specifications.
    • Address any issues or defects promptly and effectively.
  5. Cost Management:

    • Monitor project expenses and maintain a close watch on the budget.
    • Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety.
    • Prepare and submit project cost reports to management.
  6. Health and Safety:

    • Ensure that all surfacing activities comply with health and safety regulations.
    • Conduct safety meetings, risk assessments, and accident investigations.
    • Promote a safety-conscious work environment.
  7. Client Relations:

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
    • Address client concerns and provide regular project updates.
    • Ensure client satisfaction and seek opportunities for repeat business.

Experience

  • 10 years + in roading or civil engineering with at least 5 years’experience specifically in surfacing.
  • In depth knowledge of knowledge of aggregates, surfacing(asphalt), has an excellent technical understanding of materials and their application
  • Track record in the running of a successful businesses and being accountable for P&L. Experience in the financial review of projects,cost control, Work in Progress, subcontractor management
  • Proven leadership style that is firm and goal oriented whilst being in sync with requirements to mentor, support and develop surfacing employees in line with the values of the business
  • Ability to cope with changing commercial conditions and be able to implement practical and timely solutions to problems that arise
  • High understanding of contractual requirements and applying that to projects
  • High level relationship building and stakeholder management skills, ability to influence

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred).
  • Proven experience in road surfacing and pavement projects, with a minimum of 5-7 years in a managerial role
  • Excellent project management, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using project management software and tools.
  • Health and Safety certifications (e.g., Site Safe) preferred.
  • Class 2 or 4 driver's license (dependant on the equipment being used)
