Carmichael are seeking a Sustainability Advisor to join the team to work on a nuclear project based in Cumbria.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Sustainability Advisor to join a major nuclear infrastructure project in Cumbria on a permanent basis. The role will support the delivery team in embedding sustainability, environmental responsibility and carbon reduction initiatives across all phases of the project, in line with nuclear regulatory expectations and client commitments.
Working closely with project management, construction, design, supply chain and client stakeholders, you will ensure sustainability targets are translated into practical, site‑based actions while maintaining compliance within a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development and delivery of the project Sustainability Strategy, Environmental Management Plans and Carbon Reduction Plans
- Provide practical sustainability and environmental advice to project and construction teams within a nuclear‑regulated environment
- Monitor and report performance against sustainability KPIs, ESG objectives and client requirements
- Drive initiatives relating to carbon reduction, energy efficiency, waste minimisation, resource efficiency and responsible sourcing
- Support implementation of PAS 2080 principles and circular economy best practice where applicable
- Coordinate sustainability data collection, analysis and reporting for internal, client and regulatory submissions
- Engage with the supply chain to ensure sustainability and environmental requirements are understood and applied
- Support environmental compliance, including liaison with Environmental Advisors, HSE and regulatory bodies as required
- Contribute to sustainability audits, inspections and continuous improvement initiatives
- Promote a positive sustainability culture across the project and wider business
Essential Experience & Skills
- Proven experience in a Sustainability, Environmental or ESG role within construction or infrastructure
- Experience working on regulated projects (nuclear, energy, defence, rail or similarly controlled environments)
- Strong understanding of sustainability principles within construction and engineering delivery
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
- Experience with carbon reporting, waste management strategies and resource efficiency
- Ability to engage effectively with site teams, management and supply chain partners
- Strong communication, reporting and stakeholder management skills
- Competent in data analysis and performance reporting
Desirable
- Previous experience on nuclear projects or NDA / Sellafield‑related works
- Knowledge of PAS 2080, BREEAM or equivalent sustainability frameworks
- IEMA membership or working towards professional accreditation
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline
- Relevant professional certification (IEMA or similar) is advantageous
