Technical Design/Risk Manager

Location: Falmer, East Sussex (Hybrid Working – 2-3 days per week in office)

Carmichael UK are recruiting for a Technical Design/Risk Manager to join CMDP+, the strategic joint venture between Costain and MWH Treatment, delivering Southern Water's AMP8 Capital Programme.

CMDP+ has secured a significant seven-year framework agreement to deliver critical water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the Southern Water region, including treatment works, pumping stations, and reservoirs. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in providing technical leadership and governance across a major capital delivery programme.

The Role

As Technical Risk Manager, you will be responsible for providing programme-level technical assurance from initial definition of need through optioneering, solution development, detailed design, and construction support. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will ensure technical solutions are safe, affordable, buildable, and aligned with programme objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical governance and assurance across multiple water infrastructure projects.
  • Support Design Managers and Discipline Engineers in the development of technical solutions from concept through to construction.
  • Ensure affordable and sustainable design solutions are developed within programme budgets.
  • Manage and communicate water quality and technical risks throughout project development.
  • Review and challenge engineering solutions to ensure compliance with programme standards and governance procedures.
  • Promote collaborative working with clients, design teams, construction teams, and supply chain partners.
  • Ensure design solutions comply with CDM Regulations and industry best practice.
  • Support value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify, assess, and manage programme and project risks and opportunities.
  • Maintain strong stakeholder relationships and represent CMDP+ in a professional manner.

About You

  • Degree qualified in an engineering-related discipline.
  • Strong experience delivering technical projects within a design-and-build environment.
  • Extensive experience within the UK Water Industry, particularly clean water projects.
  • Strong understanding of technical governance, risk management, and solution development.
  • Commercially aware with experience reviewing technical and contractual documentation.
  • Proven ability to identify and manage project risks, opportunities, and scope changes.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng).
  • Previous experience working within a Joint Venture environment.
  • Experience with offsite manufactured and modular design solutions.
  • Knowledge of AMP framework delivery models.
