Carmicheal are seeking an experienced Temporary Works Engineer to join the team on a nuclear infrastructure project based in Cumbria.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Temporary Works Engineer to join a major nuclear infrastructure project based in Cumbria. The role will support the safe design, coordination, checking, and implementation of temporary works in a highly regulated nuclear environment. This is a permanent, site-based position working closely with construction, engineering, and safety teams to ensure full compliance with nuclear, CDM, and temporary works procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning, design, checking, and implementation of temporary works in accordance with BS 5975 and project-specific procedures
- Prepare and review temporary works design briefs, risk assessments, and method statements
- Coordinate with Temporary Works Coordinators (TWC), designers, and site teams to ensure temporary works are correctly specified and installed
- Carry out site inspections to verify compliance with approved designs and issue permits where required (e.g. permits to load/strike)
- Support the management of temporary works registers and ensure all temporary works are tracked and controlled
- Liaise with permanent works designers to manage interfaces and sequencing
- Ensure all works are delivered in line with nuclear safety culture, quality requirements, and HSE standards
- Contribute to incident investigations, design changes, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain accurate records to support quality assurance and lifetime records required on nuclear projects
Essential Requirements
- Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Proven experience working as a Temporary Works Engineer on major infrastructure or heavy civils projects
- Strong knowledge of temporary works systems including formwork, falsework, propping, excavation support, scaffolding, and access systems
- Good understanding of BS 5975, CDM Regulations, and UK HSE requirements
- Experience working in highly regulated environments (nuclear, rail, defence, or similarly controlled sectors)
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and liaise effectively with designers and site teams
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to safety and quality
Desirable
- Previous experience on nuclear licensed sites (e.g. Sellafield or similar)
- Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) or Coordinator (TWC) experience
- Membership or working towards ICE, IStructE, or similar professional body
- Familiarity with digital quality systems (e.g. Field View or equivalent)
